Bananas

This Wednesday, 18th October, is National Banana Day – so we have to give them a shout out as our produce pick of the week.  Bananas are that tasty, convenient, and ready to go healthy snack that is suitable for the whole family to enjoy.  They are packed full of essential vitamins and minerals with potassium being the front runner and potassium helps your body maintain a healthy heart and blood pressure.  While bananas are not grown locally in South Australia, they are ripened here and help boost the local economy.  Be sure to add this family favourite this week to your shopping basket at your local fruit and veg store to enjoy.  As their shape indicates, they are sure to put a smile on your face. Button Mushrooms

Sunday was National Mushroom Day celebrating all types of mushrooms.  Today, we are highlighting the Button Mushrooms which are very popular with their mild, earthy taste and firm texture.  They can be eaten raw or cooked and can be enjoyed in many pastas, omelettes, salads, stir fries or pizza topping.  Whether you sauté, stir fry, grill or BBQ these delights, they add a great flavour and texture to your meal with the added benefit of being packed full of vitamin D which help the body absorb calcium and promote bone health.

Yellow Nectarines

The first of the South Australian stone fruits have arrived – Yellow Nectarines from the Riverland.  How delicious are nectarines?  These sweet tasting, juicy stone fruits are rich in colour with a smooth edible skin and are in season from October to April.  Nectarines are versatile as they can be enjoyed on their own as a healthy snack but also in sweet and savoury dishes or add a pop of colour and sweetness to salads.  Look out for delicious Yellow Nectarines in your local fruit and veg store to add to your fruit bowl.

Broccolini

Did you know that Broccolini is a superfood?  This vegetable is rich in folate, fibre, vitamin C and antioxidants and also low in kilojoules, sugars & sodium. It’s a delicious way to add more green veg to your diet to help deliver essential nutrients to keep you feeling good.  Broccolini is fully edible, the head, leaves and the stem and can be enjoyed sauteed, steamed or stir fried and is a colour delight to many dishes including salads.  Broccolini is best enjoyed from October to April so incorporate these healthy greens into your weekly meals.
