November 13 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Sweet Palermo Capsicum

Sweet Palermo Capsicum is a sweet, pointed pepper which can be easily recognised thanks to its brand name and striking, twisted appearance. Being the sweetest of the capsicums, they have a red, thin skin and fewer seeds and have a more intense aroma.  This aroma contributes to the sweet taste which makes for a great addition to any salad or meal to add sweetness and crunch.  Sweet Palermo Capsicums can be eaten raw as a healthy snack on the go or can also be stir fried, grilled, steamed or roasted.  These juicy capsicums are bursting with vitamins so be sure to include them in your meals – enjoy!

Flat White Mushrooms

Flat white mushrooms are sometimes called ‘field’ or “barbeque’ mushrooms. They are the biggest mushroom in the white mushroom family, and they can grow in size to be over 10cm’s in diameter. As mushrooms mature, they flatten and open, revealing their gills underneath. This gives the mushroom a softer texture and a much richer umami flavour. Flat mushrooms are best used when you want the richest mushroom flavour in your meal and the darkest colour in sauces.  Fun fact – did you know that flat mushrooms are the same mushroom as a little button or a white cup mushroom which was simply left on the growing bed to get bigger and bigger!

Broccolini

Did you know that Broccolini is a superfood?  This vegetable is rich in folate, fibre, vitamin C and antioxidants and also low in kilojoules, sugars & sodium. It’s a delicious way to add more green veg to your diet to help deliver essential nutrients to keep you feeling good.  Broccolini is fully edible, the head, leaves  and the stem and can be enjoyed sauteed, steamed or stir fried and is a colour delight to many dishes including  salads.  Broccolini is best enjoyed from October to April so incorporate these healthy greens into your weekly meals.

Strawberries

Following our launch event at the Adelaide Central Markets last Friday, strawberries are now in plentiful supply and filling the shelves of local fruit and veg stores across South Australia.  These beautiful strawberries are not only great in size, but amazing in taste.  They are sweet, juicy and flavoursome which can be enjoyed on their own as a healthy snack or also incorporated in both sweet and savoury dishes.   Be sure to grab these quality South Australian strawberries when next at your local fruit and veg store which are packed full of antioxidants including vitamin C, which can support your immune system.
