May 9 In Season at the Market

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Navel Oranges

If you’re into natural immunity boosters, you’ll be pleased to hear that early season Navel Oranges have arrived – the first variety of the SA grown 2022 citrus season. This citrus variety are packed with vitamin C, which helps the body produce white blood cells and improves their ability to fight off infections. They won’t be completely filling the shelves for a few more weeks, but if you’re lucky you’ll find the early harvests direct from the Riverland ready and waiting right now.

Packham Pears

Pear season continues this week with the introduction of Packham Pears. You can tell when they’re ripe once the skin turns from a bright green colour to a more pale, yellow tone. Packham pears are also a super versatile variety, but their flavour really shines when used in cooking. Try them baked or poached and you’ll taste the full potential of this humble pear variety.

Red Darling Brussels Sprouts

No matter what your usual opinion on Brussels Sprouts is, you’ll want to hear about this variety. Red Darling sprouts produce a stunning red/purple colour and have a sweeter, nuttier flavour compared to the regular varieties. They’re also a great source of vitamin C and K, as well as folic acid. If that wasn’t enough health benefits for you, they’re also packed full of fibre and antioxidants. Give them a try this week, you just might be converted!

Kent Pumpkins

For all the pumpkin soup lovers out there, you’re about to get really excited. Local Kent Pumpkins are officially in season, and there’s nothing quite like enjoying a homemade pumpkin soup on a chilly May evening. Although, if you’re not a soup-enthusiast, this variety are also great roasted and mixed in with your favourite salad too! Traveling straight from the Riverland, these guys are almost as fresh as picking them out of your own garden (with none of the manual labour!).

Missile Apples

These pocket-sized beauties are the perfect on-the-go snack. They have the perfect crunch and juiciness that will contend with any other variety. Their name isn’t the only bold thing about them, the Missile’s firm, bright red skin is nature’s protective packaging (forget about the disappointment of a floury apple!).

This tiny but mighty variety are about the size of a mandarin or kiwifruit, making them perfect for your kids lunch boxes. Local Lenswood growers have brought generations of experience, skills and talents to ensure that the quality of Missile apples remains consistently high throughout the entire crop.
