May 30 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Lemons

Lemons at the Markets

Last week we officially launched the SA grown citrus season for 2022 which means lots of varieties of citrus will be hitting the shelves of your local fruit and veg stores straight from the Riverland. This week at the markets we are seeing great coloured, flavour-packed lemons.

We all know that freshly squeezed lemon in our drinking water has great health benefits – but we always forget to do it!  Here is a friendly reminder to grab some fresh lemons this week and give yourself a boost with a glass or two of lemon water. And what better time to do it than when they are being freshly picked from the tree!

Imperial Mandarins

The Imperial mandarin has started to arrive as the early season varieties of mandarins wrap up and make room for this variety that is packed full of sweet, tangy citrus flavour. Also packed full of Vitamin C these treats are great additions to a winter lunch box for work or school. Easy to peel and seedless the imperial mandarin is a perfect on the go snack.

Kalettes

Kalettes at the market

Fresh from the Adelaide Hills, last week saw the first harvest of the season for Kalettes. If you are unfamiliar with this relatively new vegetable, they combine the best flavours of brussels sprouts and kale, resulting in a mild, sweet and nutty fusion.

Kalettes are an incredibly versatile vegetable, they can be eaten raw, baked, stir-fried, grilled or steamed. Simply add a bit of olive oil and salt and they are ready to enjoy.

Kale

If you enjoy Kale you will be pleased to know there is plenty of supply of this superfood coming from the northern Adelaide plains at the moment.  Kale contains fibre, antioxidants, calcium, vitamins C and K, iron, and a wide range of other nutrients that help maintain good health.

Kale is versatile and can be used raw in a salad, cooked, or boiled, its sturdy texture is a great addition to soups and stews. Enjoy a healthy salad with raw, salt-kneaded kale, avocado and olives. Toss with Olive Oil and salt to make the ever-popular Kale Chips, or add to pizza or focaccia.

Packham Pears

The Adelaide Hills apple and pear season continues with a good supply of freshly picked Packham Pears. You can tell when they’re ripe once the skin turns from a bright green colour to a more pale, yellow tone. Packham pears are also a super versatile variety, but their flavour really shines when used in cooking. Try them baked or poached and you’ll taste the full potential of this humble pear variety.
