June 20 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Cara Cara Oranges

As citrus season rolls on we see Cara Cara Oranges come through the markets. This glorious Riverland grown variety have stunning orange/pink coloured flesh that resembles a Grapefruit. Arguably their best quality is the fact that they’re completely seedless! They’re deliciously aromatic and super juicy, with a sweet/tart flavour. Looking to incorporate them into your cooking this week? Try this Orange Aperol Cake – A Better Choice recipe for some citrus-sweet indulgence.

Green Kiwi Fruit

This week we see Green Kiwi Fruit in the markets, straight from New Zealand. Naturally, they’re tasting their best and freshest right now, so it’s the perfect time to pop some in the family fruit bowl (although we can’t guarantee that they’ll be there for long!).  While you may be used to seeing gold Kiwi’s around, the green varieties have a slightly bigger core, with more seeds. Green kiwis will usually have a tangier, more tropical flavour compared to the sweetness of golden varieties, which makes them great for smoothies and glazes, as well as for incorporating into savoury dishes.

Quince

We all enjoy popping a slice of quince paste on our cheese platters, but have you considered trying quince in a different capacity? While their season is still in good supply now is a great time to experiment. Raw quinces have a sour flavour, with a tough flesh and leathery skin. Once cooked they develop a subtle sweet flavour. When picking the perfect quince check for a solid-feeling fruit with minimal bruises. As the fruit ripens the furry outer layer will fall away, letting you know it’s ready to eat. Try this poached quince recipe for a sweet treat that will warm you up from the inside, perfect for cosy nights in, making your home smell delicious.

Endive

While Endive might not be a staple in your weekly grocery shop, that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be. This nutritious leafy green vegetable has a crisp texture with a sweet, nutty flavour with just a hint of bitterness. These qualities make it perfect for incorporating into salads and it can be eaten raw or cooked. Endive is packed full of vitamin K, which is essential for your overall health and can help regulate your blood sugar levels, preventing diabetes. If that doesn’t convince you to pop it in your basket this week, then nothing will!

Kipfler potatoes

We all know and love the humble potato, but how much do we really know about the different varieties? This week we’re highlighting Kipfler potatoes! These guys have a nutty, buttery taste with a creamy texture. They are packed with vitamin C, potassium, fibre and copper. Their qualities make them perfect for baking, roasting or boiling – but not so great for frying and mashing. Pairing them with flavours like lemon, garlic, rosemary and parsley is always bound to be a match made in heaven. Pick some up this week and put them to the test!
