Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Kanzi Apples

If you love sweet, tangy, and crunchy apples the Kanzi is the variety for you! Kanzi’s are rich in flavour and make for the perfect afternoon snack, providing a healthy answer to any sweet tooths’ craving. The Kanzi apples are available in a 1kg, easy to carry, sustainable packaging which you can find in stores.  Be sure to look out for these juicy, healthy treats for the whole family to enjoy!

Onion

The versatile onion is a staple in every household and available all year round. There are many varieties of onion including yellow, red, white and you also have the option of spring onions, shallots and leeks.  The cooking methods of the trusty onion is also varied, with roasted, grilled, pickled, caramelized, battered and deep-fried, sliced thinly or chopped and served raw.  The reason we cry when chopping onion is when it is sliced or diced, the onion’s cells release these compounds into the air. When this occurs, “enzyme” works to alter the amino acids into lachrymator compounds. This form of sulfuric acid irritates the nerves around the eyes making us cry.

Lemons

This week we are focusing on lemons! Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, lemons have amazing health benefits and are extremely versatile – try squeezing one into your morning cup of tea or adding a few slices to your glass of water to give it a refreshing taste! There is plenty of supply coming directly from the Riverland with great colour and flavour, so now is the best time to add some of these tangy delights to your shopping basket!

Cara Cara Oranges

As citrus season rolls on, we see Cara Cara Oranges come through the markets. This glorious Riverland grown variety have stunning orange/pink coloured flesh that resembles a Grapefruit. Arguably their best quality is the fact that they’re completely seedless! They’re deliciously aromatic and super juicy, with a sweet/tart flavour. Cara Cara orange peels contain flavourful essential oils that can be used in recipes calling for citrus zest.  Be sure to enjoy these immune boosting bright beauties for a healthy snack or incorporate in your delicious desserts.
