January 9 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Rockmelon

Nothing says summer like melons – and it is great to see the supply of Riverland grown Rockmelons on the market floor this week making their way to local fruit and veg stores across Adelaide. Like most fruits, rockmelon has high water content, at almost 90% which means it is a great fruit to eat to help you keep hydrated throughout summer.  If you are hosting a party, try this great recipe for a Rockmelon Frose you will be sure to impress your guests!

Strawberries

Adelaide Hills Strawberries are relishing in the summer sunshine we are experiencing this week.  Supplies of locally grown strawberries are plentiful, and the quality is high.  Great for a snack on the go, in desserts and fruit salads  – be sure to pick some up in the weekly shop and support our South Australian growers that had a rough start to this season.

Green Jalepeno

If you are looking to spice up your cooking this week, look for locally grown green jalepeno. With a taste very similar to green capsicum these peppers can be quite hot and go well on top of hummus or mix into a coleslaw salad for a bit of kick!

Cherry

Typically bought at Christmas time, this year’s locally grown cherry season is hitting it’s peak in January. Great news for those that enjoy this seasonal stone fruit – you will find plenty of cherries in the fruit aisle this week. Why not grab a box to share at the office to beat the post holiday blues.
