February 6 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Strawberries

Just in time for Valentines Day next week the team from Ceravolo Orchards have packaged up the sweetest Adelaide Hills grown strawberries for you to share with someone you love berry much!  And if you are after a healthy aphrodisiac and your love language is food – dark chocolate covered strawberries should definitely be on your shopping list!

Rockmelon

South Australian grown Rockmelons are in great supply at the moment. By incorporating rockmelon into your diet, you can enjoy its delicious taste while also reaping its numerous health benefits. Rockmelons are low in calories and high in water content, making them a great option for hydration and weight management. They are also a good source of vitamins, such as vitamin C, which helps boost the immune system, and vitamin A, which supports eye health. And for a treat – we love the simple dessert of enjoying a half a rockmelon with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Bullhorn Capsicums

Bullhorn Capsicum is a type of chili pepper that is characterised by its unique shape. It resembles a bull’s horn and is typically larger than other chili varieties, growing up to 20 cms long. The flavour of Bullhorn Capsicum is moderate to hot and has a sweet and slightly smoky taste. Our grower here at the markets recommends this variety for roasting but they are also commonly used in Mexican and Southwestern cuisine and are popular for use in sauces, salsas, and marinades. The capsicum is usually harvested when it is fully ripe and red, but it can also be consumed when it is green.

Carrots

Grown all year round this week we thought we would shine a spotlight on South Australian grown carrots. Eating carrots is a great way to incorporate essential vitamins and minerals into your diet. Carrots are a rich source of vitamin A, which is essential for good vision, skin health, and a strong immune system. In addition to their health benefits, carrots are versatile and can be eaten raw, cooked, or blended into soups and smoothies. They can also be added to sweet and savory dishes, making them a delicious addition to any meal.
