February 13 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Kohlrabi

If you’re looking to try something a bit different this week, why not pick up some kohlrabi.  Right now you will find them in a variety of colours and they are coming fresh from Uraidla. As a member of the cabbage family kohlrabi is an unusual looking but delicious vegetable widely used in salads or soups – but can also be roasted or sauteed. Kohlrabi has a slightly sweet taste relatable to other vegetables such as broccoli or cabbage and is packed full of vitamin C, fibre, and potassium which can help play a role in reducing health diseases such as diabetes.

Strawberries

Put some sweetness into your valentine’s day and tell someone you love them berry much with a punnet of Adelaide Hills grown strawberries.  With the warm weather our locally grown varieties are brightly coloured and tasting sweet. Dark chocolate-covered strawberries contain high amounts of flavan-3-ols that help stimulate blood flow so they are a great natural aphrodisiac!

Chilli Plants

For a short time the SA Produce Market is supplying your local fruit and veg store with chili plants to add to your home garden. These plants supplied locally from Virginia will spice up your cooking for months to come. Studies have shown that hot peppers can reduce inflammation and decrease the chances of heart disease.

Beetroot

The hearty beetroot can often be overlooked, but now is the perfect time to incorporate them into your roast vegetable salads. Roast beetroot goes great with pumpkin, feta and rocket in a salad. Their vibrant and rich shades add great colour to your dish, along with their fantastic earthy flavours and have been known to assist with inflammation so are fantastic for heart health.
