February 12 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Strawberries

Valentine’s Day is this week and what a sweet (no pun intended) way to gift your loved one with a heart shaped pack of strawberries to enjoy on the day of love!  Ceravolo Orchards have packaged up the sweetest Adelaide Hills grown strawberries for you to share with someone you love berry much!  And if you are after a healthy aphrodisiac and your love language is food – dark chocolate covered strawberries should definitely be on your shopping list!  Look out for these love heart packaged strawberries at your local fruit and veg store to give to your Valentine!

Capsicum

Capsicums are a great vegetable to add taste and colour to a variety of salads, stir fry, pizza, platters, casseroles, muffins and the list goes on!  At the market we are seeing a steady supply of capsicums of all colours, red, green, yellow and orange which are a good source of antioxidants and vitamin C.   Red capsicums pack the most nutrition because they’ve been on the vine the longest   Be sure to add capsicums to your shopping basket to incorporate in your weekly meals.

Summerlove Apples

What an appropriate name for a beautiful apple.  Summerlove apples have a tart taste initially, much like a Granny Smith, but then have a sweet aftertaste similar to a Pink Lady.  These delicious apples only have a very short season of approximately 3-4 weeks…… yes weeks.  These apples have a wonderful crisp, crunch with a white flesh and shiny red skin which is aesthetically pleasing.  If you would like to tantalise your taste buds with Summerlove, be sure to look out for these beauties at your local market or fruit and veg store but be quick as they won’t be around for long!

Rockmelons

Summer is a great time to enjoy a variety of melons and rockmelon would be one of my favourites!  With its floral taste and sweet, juicy orange coloured flesh it is a refreshing and healthy fruit to enjoy on its own or to be enjoyed in fruit salads, platters, sorbet, salads, salsa and smoothies.  As melons have a high water content and low calorie count as well as being a good source of potassium, vitamin B and C, consumption of melons can contribute to healthy cholesterol levels.  Be sure to enjoy refreshing rockmelons while they are plentiful in the summer months.
