Citrus season launches just in time to fuel the kids for winter sports

Orange Season Launch

The 2020 SA citrus season launches today with Minister Whetstone MP delivering citrus supplied by the SA Produce Market to boost spirits of South Australian sports playing children

Today’s delivery marks the start of a four-week campaign to deliver over a tonne of oranges to ensure school children and sporting clubs are all set for the Winter season.

South Australian Produce Market CEO Angelo Demasi said, “We want to support our youth to be active, and what better way than with something healthy that could lift their spirits? The South Australian Produce Market is proud to support the kids as they get back into sport.”

After packing and delivering the oranges personally early today, Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, Hon Tim Whetstone MP, said “The horticulture industry is crucial to South Australia contributing more than $1 billion to our state’s economy and it’s exciting to be able to officially launch the citrus season for 2020.

“Delivering oranges to school children just as they are allowed to return to outdoor sports training is a fitting way to kickstart the citrus season.”

Citrus SA CEO Mark Doecke Said “South Australian citrus is now available and in good supply and tasting great. All citrus fruits are a great source of Vitamin C and all the experts advise that regular intake of Vitamin C helps to keep your immune system strong and assist your body to fight off disease. Buying Lemons, Limes and Oranges this Winter helps our SA kids get back into their sport and also helps our industry – it’s a win-win.”

According to Citrus SA demand is excellent as the season starts. “Supply will be around our average this year and prices so far are very good.  The 2020 citrus is set to be even better than 2019 for consumer as we have less wind blemish this year and slightly larger sizes due to a long hot growing season” Mr Doecke said.

“We’re so excited about the taste and flavour of the SA new season citrus available for South Australians to purchase from Pick a Local Pick SA! Retailers – the whole family will love them” said Market Fresh SA’s Pick a Local, Pick SA! Campaign Manager Penny Reidy.

“A great way for the community to support our SA citrus growers is through the simple act of purchasing a kilogram of oranges when they can this season” said Reidy. “Oranges play a key role in half time energy boosts for kids and are a great addition to a lunchbox for school or work.”
