August 28 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Little Gem Bananas

These delicious gems are the perfect snack sized bananas, making them perfect for kids and lunchbox sized fruit. Wrapped by nature, these convenient sized bananas are only 10-15cm long. To enjoy their sweet and creamy taste, these Aussie grown bananas are best eaten when black spots appear on the skin and the Little Gem Bananas are perfect for fruit salads as they do not go brown like other varieties. As they are rich in fibre, potassium, vitamins A, B6 and C these little “gems” are sure to be a family favourite.

Mandarins

As we are in the midst of Citrus Season we are still seeing a great supply of South Australian mandarins at the market.  Packed full of sweet, tangy citrus flavour – mandarins are the perfect addition for school lunchboxes offering an easy to peel and seedless snack.  Packed full of Vitamin C, these immunity boosting mandarins are the perfect sweet treat to enjoy.  Be sure to grab some for your whole family to enjoy next time you are at your local fruit and veg store.

Parsnips

Parsnips are a root vegetable that have a sweet and nutty flavour, with subtle hints of liquorice! Along with vitamin C, they are also rich in potassium which assists with heart function. This extremely diverse vegetable is a classic ingredient in broths and soups. It can also be baked, sauteed, steamed, mashed, pureed, roasted, used in stews, and fried. The ways in which you can add Parsnips to your diet is essentially limitless!

Lemons

This week we are focusing on lemons which are locally grown in both the Riverland and Adelaide Hills! Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants which boost immunity and promote heart, digestive and liver health, lemons have amazing health benefits and are extremely versatile.  Try squeezing one into your morning cup of tea or adding a few slices to your glass of water to give it a refreshing taste! There is plenty of supply with great colour and flavour, so now is the best time to add some of these tangy delights to your shopping basket!
