August 1 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Rocket

Rocket at the market

This week we are highlighting Rocket, which is a delicious Mediterranean leafy vegetable from the Brassicaceae family which includes Broccoli and Cabbage. Rich in antioxidants and nitrates, Rocket leaves have an intense peppery taste – perfect for pizzas, wraps, or having alongside your Sunday morning scrambled eggs.  With great supply currently in the Market, keep an eye out for pre-packed or loose varieties of rocket in your local Fruit & Veg store this week!

Leeks

With the cold weather hanging around we are still very much in soup season. So, what better ingredient to include in your next slow-cooked soup than Leeks? These guys will go well in pretty much any winter-warmer dish. Their mild, slight onion-flavour makes them versatile and palatable with a range of different flavours. Their long list of health benefits is another reason why you shouldn’t hesitate to pop them in your basket this week. They’re a great source of vitamin K, B6, C, E and A, magnesium, calcium and omega-3 fatty acids.

Red kohlrabi

You may have seen the traditional green Kohlrabi, but did you know this tasty vegetable also comes in a red variety? As a member of the cabbage family kohlrabi is an unusual looking but delicious vegetable widely used in salads or soups – but can also be roasted or sauteed. Kohlrabi has a slightly sweet taste and is packed full of vitamin C, fibre, and potassium which can help play a role in reducing health diseases such as diabetes.

Mandarins

Mandarins at the market

Heading into August, we are still seeing great supply of South Australian citrus with mandarins leading the way. Packed full of sweet, tangy citrus flavour – mandarins are the perfect addition for school lunchboxes offering an easy to peel and seedless snack.

Fun fact – Did you know that the name mandarin refers to the bright orange robes worn by the public officials of the ancient Chinese courts, who were called mandarins?

Portobello Mushrooms

Portobello mushrooms are a large, meaty mushroom that has an earthy flavour with a dense texture. Due to their large size, Portobello mushrooms are extremely versatile – perfect for grilling, broiling, or stuffing. Feeling like adding more veggies to your diet this week? Try grilling and adding to your burger in place of a meat patty.
