April 8 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Bravo Apples

Bravo ApplesIn the midst of SA grown apple season new varieties are arriving to the market on an almost weekly basis.  This wee Bravo apples have hit the shelves. With a vibrant burgundy skin, sweet flavour and moderate crisp and crunch, they are sure to please.  With a high concentration of flavonoids, not only are they excellent for your health, but unlike other apples, their flesh is ultra slow to turn brown which is a great addition to your grazing boards and cheese platters. Be sure to look out for these “burgundy beauties” in your local fruit and veg store from this week.

Green Kiwi Fruit

This week we see Australian grown Green Kiwi Fruit in the markets. Whilst the majority of this fruit comes from New Zealand, we have a small supply of Australian grown that kick off the season. While you may be used to seeing gold Kiwi’s around, the green varieties have a slightly bigger core, with more seeds. Green kiwis will usually have a tangier, more tropical flavour compared to the sweetness of golden varieties, which makes them great for smoothies and glazes, as well as for incorporating into savoury dishes.

Persimmon

PersimmonThese might not be the most common item in your fruit-bowl, but they’re certainly worth a spot. Don’t be fooled by their tomato-like appearance, these guys are super sweet and can be eaten just as easily as an apple or pear. If you’ve got some adventurous kids at home this might be the perfect new introduction to their lunch boxes!

Seedless Lemons

This week at the markets we are seeing great coloured, flavour-packed lemons – grown right here in South Australia’s riverland – and they are seedless. We all know that freshly squeezed lemon in our drinking water has great health benefits – and even better when it has no seeds!  Here is a friendly reminder to grab some fresh lemons this week and give yourself a boost with a morning glass or two of lemon water.
