April 4 In Season at the Market

Fresh Produce

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Celery

One of our favourite versatile vegetables is in season as we speak – Celery! The season kicked off with unusually low stock but this week we’re seeing an increase of locally grown supply. This humble veg can be included in a variety of dishes, Salad? Pasta Sauce? Soup? We say all of the above. If this still doesn’t have you convinced, just slather a piece with peanut butter, you won’t regret it.

White Zucchini

The white zucchini (also known as a courgette) may look slightly different to the varieties you’re used to seeing in-store, but don’t let that stop you. This sweet and mild variety are a great source of Vitamin C and fibre. If you’re itching to change it up in the kitchen this week, try this delicious stuffed Zucchini recipe, it could become your next dinnertime staple.

Chillies

Chillies? Grown is SA? Yep, you read that right! At this time of year, we’re all craving delicious food that warms our bodies from the inside out, and what better ingredient to achieve this with than SA chillies? However, if your spice tolerance isn’t much to write home about simply pop your left-over whole chillies in the freezer to use later, that way you can enjoy great tasting SA varieties all year round.

Carrots

Did you know that SA grows more than 2,000 tonnes of carrots per annum? Now that’s some serious night vision. They’re a particularly good source of fibre, vitamin K1, potassium, and antioxidants. Usually grown in the Riverland Region and the northern Adelaide plains, they don’t travel far before ending up on your dinner plate, tasting their freshest and best (and just in time for your Easter Celebrations!).

Kanzi Apples

Apple season is still in full swing and this week we introduce a new variety, Kanzi’s! If your preference is sweet, tangy, crunchy apples then Kanzi’s just might become your new favourite. They make for the perfect afternoon snack and can combat even the strongest sweet tooths’ cravings. Head into selected ‘Pick A Local Pick SA’ retail stores this month to try a sample! They’ll be holding in-store demo’s over the coming weeks.
See their Facebook page for more details.

Jujubes

You can always trust us to include at least one unusual variety in our produce updates, and this week is no different. The in-season ‘Li’ variety Jujubes (also known as Chinese Dates) have a pear-like texture and are crisp like an apple. Packed with antioxidants, this superfood has enough Vitamin C inside a single fruit to meet your daily intake! Pick some up from your local fruit and veg store this week while they’re in season.
