April 3 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store. 

Pomegranates

These Pomegranates, locally grown near Monarto, are in season and perfect to be added to your desserts, salads or simply enjoyed on their own.  The edible seeds called arils are packed full with nutrients and rich in antioxidants.  Pomegranate arils taste a lot like cranberries, fairly tart with a bit of sweetness underneath so be sure to look for this unique fruit in your local fruit and veg store for a tasty snack or to add extra “zest” to your recipes.

Figs

Fig season, which is from January to April, is coming to an end but our local growers still have plenty of this delicious, sweet fruit available.  This diverse fruit can be utilised in so many ways, whether they’re a sweet addition to your next cheese platter, taking centre stage in your next dessert or just zesting up a salad, these South Australian grown figs can’t be beat.  For a healthy breakfast option, try fig and banana overnight oats here – simply delicious.

Jujubes

The jujube fruit, also known as a Chinese red date, has a short in-season but these deliciously sweet fruit are a must for your tastebuds.  There are 2 varieties, the small Honey Jar variety which is packed full of sweetness and the Li variety which is larger and still has a sweet taste but definitely more subtle.  The jujube fruit has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 4,000 years, and it’s any wonder why as the jujube fruit is packed with healthy vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that are amazing for your mind and body.  Be sure to look for these exotic little beauties in your local fruit and veg store and enjoy!

Beurre Bosc Pears

With a reputation as the ‘aristocrats among pears’ the Beurre Bosc Pears are sure to impress at your next dinner party, and what better time to utilise them than while they’re in season? This variety are a great option when incorporating pear into desserts, while adding a touch of gourmet flare.  Grown in the Adelaide Hills they are perfect for poached pear desserts.
