April 24 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Celery

This week we are highlighting locally grown celery which is in steady supply in the market. This humble veg can be included in a variety of dishes ranging from salads, soups, health juices and casseroles.  This leafy variety is low in kilojoules, full of antioxidants and rich in fibre.  Historically it helped treat ailments such as toothaches, insomnia, gout, anxiety and arthritis! While celery can be a slightly polarising vegetable, its versatility makes it hard to hate. Plus, their slight bitterness can always be combatted with a generous dollop of peanut butter or accompany any cheese platter for a healthy option to crackers.

Zucchini

As we move further into the cooler seasons’ we see the crowd-pleasing zucchini come into great supply! This antioxidant rich veg improves heart health, aids weight loss and contributes to healthy digestion. Not only are they great for their many health benefits, they’re also incredibly versatile – perfect for sneaking in a bit of extra nutrients into your meals!

Jazz Apples

The crisp and juicy Jazz Apple are plentiful in the markets and has literally just been picked off the trees and are tasting better than ever. Grown in the Adelaide Hills, they only travel an extremely short distance before they end up in your shopping basket. The sweet-tart flavour and crisp texture make Jazz apples great for snacking on or baking with including muffins, cakes or apple pies. Head into your local fruit and veg store and pick some up this week!

Packham Pears

Pear season continues this week with the introduction of Packham Pears. You can tell when they’re ripe once the skin turns from a bright green colour to a more pale, yellow tone. Packham pears are also a super versatile variety, but their flavour really shines when used in cooking. Try them baked or poached and you’ll taste the full potential of this humble pear variety.
