April 17 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Red D’Anjou Pears

Red D’Anjou pears are a delicious variety of pear recognisable from its egg-shaped appearance and distinctive rich red skin. Packed full of fibre and nutrients, these pears are juicy with a sweet and slightly tangy taste making them perfect for cooking and eating fresh. These red delights ripen perfectly at room temperature so be sure to add them to your fruit bowl for the whole family to enjoy!

Potatoes

For those that have heard in the media there is a shortage of chips at your local takeaway shop – that may be true – however, rest assured the potato supplies that fill the stores of your local fruit and veg store are in great supply.  Why not try making your own home-made chips? – pull out the air fryer and enjoy some fresh South Australian grown potatoes.

Oyster Mushrooms

The Epicurean Food Group’s oyster farm located at the old Holden site in Elizabeth is now in production providing a great variety of Oyster mushrooms grown right here in South Australia. Traditionally imported from Asia, Oyster mushrooms can now be locally sourced and we love seeing these now on shelves in our local fruit and veg stores. If you have not tried this variety of mushroom, they can be used just like you would a button mushroom so add them to your stirfry or curry, sauté them up for breakfast or enjoy them on burgers.

Persimmons

Persimmons are not as popular in the fruit bowl as other fruits but their bright, tomato-like appearance definitely offer a burst of colour, not to mention a sweet honey-like flavour. They have many health benefits being rich in antioxidants and contain many nutrients including fibre and Vitamin A. This tasty fruit can be enjoyed fresh, dried or cooked and included in jellies, curries, puddings and drinks.  Be sure to look for them at your local fruit and veg store to enjoy as a healthy snack.
