April 15 In Season at the Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Spring Onion

Locally grown spring onions are in good supply at the markets this week. With a more mellower flavour than regular onions, they only need to be cooked very briefly – or most regularly used as garnish without any cooking at all.  Spring onions are a popular choice for Asian inspired dishes as well as salads, stir fries, fritters and more. To get the most out of this veg, you can use the green tops as well as the small white bulb – keep them fresh by storing them in the fridge, ideally wrapped in paper towel and stored in a snap lock bag in the crisper.

Zucchini

As we move further into the cooler seasons’ we see the crowd-pleasing zucchini come into great supply! This antioxidant rich veg improves heart health, aids weight loss and contributes to healthy digestion. Not only are they great for their many health benefits, they’re also incredibly versatile and can be included in vegetarian lasagne, soups, stir fries, fritters and slices – perfect for sneaking in a bit of extra nutrients into your meals!

Sweet Corn

This week we are seeing a good supply of Riverland grown sweet corn at the market and they are a great option to include in your week night dinners.  They can be enjoyed cooked on the barbecue or steam them on the stove top and add a dob of butter for an easy side dish the whole family can enjoy.  Include corn kernels in your Mexican inspired dishes as well as many salads, fritters, mornay and quiches just to name a few.  Although sweet corn has a higher sugar content, it is a delicious veg to enjoy in these cooler seasons.

Rockmelon

South Australian grown rockmelons are still in good supply at the moment. By incorporating rockmelon into your diet, you can enjoy its delicious taste while also reaping its numerous health benefits as they are packed full of vitamins.   Rockmelons are low in calories and high in water content, making them a great option for hydration and weight management. This delicious fruit is great to be used in savoury dishes including a great variety of salads which highlight the sweet, fresh taste of rockmelon.  And for a treat – we love the simple dessert of enjoying a half a rockmelon with a scoop of vanilla ice cream – enjoy!
