April 11 in Season at the Market

Fresh Produce

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Mushrooms

If you’re a lover of mushrooms, then you will love that these versatile veg are available all year round! Right now, South Aussie mushrooms are tasting fantastic – Button, Large BBQ, Portabella, Swiss  – it doesn’t matter, they’re all ready and waiting to be eaten.

The Australian Mushroom Growers Association have been campaigning their Blend recipes – try mixing your mince meat with mushrooms and add some extra vitamins and flavour to your dinners. Who knows, when they’re tasting this good you might convert some stubborn mushroom-haters.

Jazz Apples

This week we welcome back local Jazz Apples into the markets. This crowd favourite has literally just been harvested and are tasting better than ever. Grown in the Adelaide Hills, they only travel an extremely short distance before they end up in your shopping basket. The sweet-tart flavour and crisp texture make Jazz apples great for snacking on or baking with.

Beetroot

The hearty beetroot can often be overlooked, but now is the perfect time to incorporate them into your next roast dinner. Their vibrant and rich shades add great colour to your dish, along with their fantastic earthy flavours.

Roast beetroot goes great with pumpkin, feta and rocket in a salad – or simply add them to your roast vegetable medley.

Figs

Our local growers have definitely FIG-ured out a sure-fire way to produce amazing tasting figs (we assure you the figs are better than our puns). This diverse fruit can be utilised in so many ways, whether they’re levelling up your next cheese platter, taking centre stage in your next dessert or just livening up a salad, these South Australian grown figs can’t be beat.

Strawberries

This is your reminder to pick up some delicious South Australian Adelaide Hills grown strawberries before they go out of season very shortly! Don’t be deterred by the end of season crops, they’re still full flavoured, sweeter than ever and waiting to be enjoyed. Eat them fresh, chocolate covered or inside your Friday night cocktail (or all of the above) before they’re all gone!

Potatoes

While it may be almost impossible to make potatoes taste bad, that doesn’t mean their flavour can’t be improved upon. Picking up varieties that are local & in season is the best way to ensure you’re extracting the most flavour out of your potatoes. So, whether they’re deep fried, mashed, roasted or boiled look for South Australian grown next time you pick some up.
