Oct 27 In Season at the SA Produce Market

Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.

Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.

Jack O Lantern Pumpkins

It’s that spooky time of year and as more and more Aussies are embracing the tradition of Halloween so too are your local fruit and veg stores. This week we see plenty of stock of the specially grown Halloween Pumpkins at the South Australian Produce market floor making their way to fruit and veg retailers all over Adelaide. The Jack O’ Lantern pumpkin is an outstanding variety for decorative uses; fruits are uniformly round and a rich dark orange colour with very little flesh. Look for them in-stores this week.

Spring Onions

Locally grown spring onions are in good supply at the markets this week. With a more mellower flavour than regular onions, they only need to be cooked very briefly – or most regularly used as garnish without any cooking at all.  Try them mixed with grated cheese and mayonnaise for a classic lunch sandwich option this week. And to get the most out of this veg, you can use the green tops as well as the small white bulb – keep them fresh by storing them in the fridge.

Maha Mangoes

Mango lovers — the moment you’ve been waiting for is here!  While these beauties aren’t grown right here in SA, the South Australian Produce Market is overflowing with fresh supplies this week… and trust us, they’re worth getting excited about! Keep an eye out at your local independent fruit & veg store for Maha Mangoes — also known as Banana Mangoes or Elephant Tusk Mangoes because of their long, elegant shape.

Why do we love them? Thin, flat seed = more mouth-watering mango to enjoy

Naturally sweet and smooth flesh

Perfect for slicing, blending, or eating straight over the sink (we don’t judge!)

From smoothies to summer fruit bowls, these mangoes bring sunshine to every bite.  Swing by your local greengrocer this week and pick up some

Capsicum

It is great to see a steady supply of capsicums in the South Australian Produce Market this week. Believe it or not, there is technically no difference between a red, green, orange or yellow capsicum. Capsicums always start off green, turn yellow, then orange, and finally red; each stage of ripeness holds different flavours and uses in the kitchen. Capsicums are mistakenly labelled as a vegetable but are in reality a fruit as they bear seeds and grow on flowering plants. Enjoy these beautiful, crisp, juicy capsicums in your healthy salad or try stuffed capsicum for a hot alternative.
