February 09 In Season at the SA Produce Market
Buying and eating in season produce is good for your nutrition and helps the economy, our seasonal updates are here to lend a hand.
Let us inspire you with just a few of the fresh, locally grown produce now in season at the South Australia Produce Market that you will find at your local fruit and veg store.
QTee Pears
Say hello to the QTee pear. Bold in colour and big on flavour, this beautifully blushed pear offers a sweet, aromatic taste with a texture that adapts to every use. From fresh snacking to baking and preserving, QTee pears do it all — but only for a short season. Stock up while you can.
Capsicum
It is great to see a steady supply of capsicums in the South Australian Produce Market this week. Believe it or not, there is technically no difference between a red, green, orange or yellow capsicum. Capsicums always start off green, turn yellow, then orange, and finally red; each stage of ripeness holds different flavours and uses in the kitchen. Capsicums are mistakenly labelled as a vegetable but are in reality a fruit as they bear seeds and grow on flowering plants. Enjoy these beautiful, crisp, juicy capsicums in your healthy salad or try stuffed capsicum for a hot alternative.
Roma Tomatoes
Roma tomatoes, commonly known as plum tomatoes, are a highly regarded variety valued for their rich flavour, firm flesh, and meaty texture. Characterised by their oblong shape, Roma tomatoes contain fewer seeds and lower water content than many other tomato varieties, making them especially well suited to cooking.
These qualities make Roma tomatoes the ideal choice for preparing traditional sauces, including classic Italian sugo. When cooked, they break down beautifully, producing a thick, full-bodied sauce with concentrated flavour. Roma tomatoes are also perfectly suited for pasta sauces, pizza bases, soups, and slow-cooked dishes, where depth of flavour and consistency are essential.
Pineapples
While not grown in South Australia, our pineapples are sourced from Queensland and the Northern Territory, where ideal tropical conditions produce fruit that is ripe, juicy, and naturally sweet. Ready to eat and full of flavour, pineapples are perfect enjoyed fresh, added to salads and smoothies, or used in both sweet and savoury dishes. For a simple and delicious dessert idea, try our pineapple and passionfruit upside-down cake — a classic favourite with a tropical twist.
